And they say there’s nothing to do in Sudbury

One of the fascinating things about living in Sudbury is meeting and mingling with some very interesting people one would not expect to find in a medium-sized city known best for its nickel mines. For example, we have a very talented and accomplished film director living in our community. David Lickley has been making IMAX films for two decades. These include Born to be Wild (2011) and Wonders of the Arctic, which is scheduled to be released this spring. Lickley will be talking about his experiences at Martinis at the MAX (Thursday night Jan, 16) at Science North. Filmmakers Jonathan Barker and Wendy MacKeigan, who is a former Sudbury resident, will be talking about their film Flight of the Butterflies 3D as well. Martinis at the MAX is the start of the annual IMAX Festival. Tickets for the evening are $50. People are encouraged to wear red and white to celebrate all things Canadian, eh!

The 2014 IMAX Festival runs until Feb. 2. A complete schedule of films is available at Science North’s website. Passports that are good for five films cost $30 for members and $35 for non members.

(Jan. 17 and 18) Friday and Saturday night Sudbury “celebrities” will stretch their talents to entertain at a benefit for the Sudbury Theatre Centre. Teams of amateur actors including police officers, firefighters, CBC broadcasters and Rotarians will entertain. It makes for a surprisingly entertaining evening. Tickets are $30 and they are available at the STC.

It is possible to see world-class entertainment without having to leave Sudbury. SilverCity Cinemas offers opera from New York City, theatre from London, and ballet from Moscow. Sunday (Jan.19 at

12:55 pm, SilverCity presents Jewels with the Bolshoi company. They dance a ballet created by George Ballenchine to the music of Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky. Tickets are $23.

Monday evening (Jan. 20) at 7 pm Sudbury Theatre Centre will be present Last Stop, an evening of original play readings by its writers’ group, the Playwrights’ Junction. Sudbury Theatre Centre should be applauded for its efforts to encourage emerging playwrights. Admission is by donation.
