Leila and I went to PEI

Sudbury Living Magazine August 15, 2017 Anna Barsanti No Comments

When Leila was a little girl, I made a promise that each summer I would take her to a different part of Canada, so she can learn firsthand what a magnificent country we live in. Canada’s 150 was a great year to move outside Ontario. Prince Edward Island has been on my bucket list for a very long while and so became the first province. Why, oh why, did it take me so long to get there?

We flew from Sudbury to Charlottetown as I had promised her a plane ride and the thought of driving wasn’t appealing to me. The last two visits I made to the East Coast were by car and the time spent was too short. We had 8 full days to explore the Island and only managed to do two thirds. We will be back to do the east county.

The natural beauty of Prince Edward Island is enhanced and enriched with its history, culture, food, and the welcome ways of the residents. Each day we would start with slow moving mornings – reading and writing time for me; sleep, TV or iPad time for Leila, then breakfast before we would head out for the adventure of the day.

We visited art galleries, hiked, searched for lighthouses, explored beaches, attended musicals, visited museums, enjoyed Cows ice cream, fished, experienced the legend of Anne of Green Gables, and ate delicious food at a variety of restaurants. Drove the speed limit or less and didn’t create any stress for other drivers. Pedestrian crosswalks are plentiful and traffic stops. Carriages go through 4-way stops and cars are considerate of the need because it is hard for the horses to start up each time.

“Slow down and enjoy life. It’s not only the scenery you miss by going too fast-you also miss the sense of where you are going and why.”
