Who’s Who: Leo Gerard

Sudbury Living Magazine January 6, 2020 Lifestyle, Sudbury's Stories No Comments on Who’s Who: Leo Gerard

Leo Gerard is an influential labour leader on the national and international stage. He had a five-decade career of labour activism, including 18 years as United Steelworkers International president. (USW represents 860,294 members across North America.)

After his retirement from the Pittsburgh headquarters earlier this year, Leo has returned to live in Sudbury. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Susan, and they have two daughters.

Leo has dedicated his life to improving working conditions for men and women in Canada and the United States.

He never lost the union spirit shared with thousands of Sudbury families, past and present, and he continues to remind people that an eight-hour day and health and safety legislation are part of the union legacy.

Often citing the Sudbury experience, Leo brought attention to environmental issues, supporting greening legislation, and was an early founder of the Blue Green Alliance — a critical partnership between labour and environmental organizations.
