Tips to pack light for your next vacation

(NC) When packing for a vacation many of us tend to think that more is better. We want to make sure that we’re prepared for anything and everything that our trip will bring us. However, a heavy and over stuffed suitcase can make travel a hassle with additional fees for baggage claim, increased suitcase regulations and most importantly, these weighty items can put a serious strain on your back, neck and shoulders.

Follow these tips from the Ontario Chiropractic Association on how to pack your suitcase the right way to keep it light and avoid injuries:

1. Make a packing list. Planning in advance and creating a list of things that you need for your trip can help to ensure that only the necessary items end up in your suitcase.

2. Buy light luggage. When shopping for new luggage, look for a sturdy, light, high-quality and transportable piece. Test the luggage to see if it’s heavy when there is nothing inside of it and make sure it has a maneuverable set of wheels and flexible handle to avoid any unnecessary lifting or pulling.

3. Repurpose your outfits. Instead of throwing your whole wardrobe into a suitcase, pick and choose items that can serve double or triple duty for different occasions on your vacation. Packing items that can be dressed up or down can seriously lighten the load of your suitcase.

4. Go for a layered look. Try to wear your bulkiest clothing and heaviest pair of shoes on the day of your travel. This means these items don’t have to take up room or weight in your suitcase, and ensures you’ll be warm and comfortable in the airport and on the plane which can often be highly air conditioned.

5. Think miniature. It’s highly unlikely that you’ll need an entire bottle of shampoo for a week’s vacation. Don’t waste precious space in your toiletries bag with full-size containers of deodorant, shampoo, and toothpaste. Instead, look for some sample sizes at your drug store, or transfer what you have into travel-sized mini bottles.

The stress of travel, from long days, to uncomfortable seats, to luggage that’s too heavy can cause a number of problems including muscle strain, headaches, back, neck and arm pain. Make sure to pack light to ensure your next vacation is fun, and injury free.
