Bigger: Happy New Year Sudbury

Sudbury Living Magazine December 30, 2019 Our Town No Comments on Bigger: Happy New Year Sudbury

Mayor Brian Bigger extends his best wishes for everyone in the City of Greater Sudbury to have a fantastic, safe and very Happy New Year

“As we wind down 2019, I just wanted to reach out and wish all of the residents, City staff and my fellow members of City Council a very happy new year.

This has been a challenging year that required a lot of patience and understanding. Record breaking snow falls and some major project delays tested us all, but I do want to make sure we recall and remember some of the very amazing things that happened in our City this past year. To name just a few, Maley Drive is complete, and the traffic flow is already easing across Lasalle Blvd. We’ve broken ground on Place Des Arts, the Junction project is moving along, and we have heard from residents and have made plowing a priority – this winter came early, and we were ready.”

There were several other successful projects and accomplishments:

These included:
 Over $80 million dollars in capital investments in road construction and repair during the 2019 construction season including significant repairs on the Kingsway, MR-35, Notre Dame Ave, Lasalle Blvd and Regent Street.  Complete transformation of Public Transit through the launch of the GOVA, GOVA+ and GOVA Zone.  Entering a new decade with a plan to tackle climate change with the Community Energy and Emissions Plan.  Improving how we sort and divert waste, we are seeing a significant reduction in the amount of garbage ending up in local landfills, thanks to a community-wide effort.  Moving forward with the Northern and Rural Immigration Pilot Program to support businesses and organizations in our community who are in need of skilled and talented workers.  Taking important steps in our community towards reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.

“As we welcome in another decade, I just wanted to reiterate my gratitude to everyone who works so hard for our City and its residents.

Our staff are out there 24/7 keeping our City operating. There are a lot of long hours and difficult tasks that go un-thanked and I would be remiss if I let that pass by. My fellow Councillors sacrifice their time with family and even their health to serve all of those they represent. We live in an amazing City that enjoys modern luxuries and the beauty of nature. We’re truly lucky, and as we begin 2020 I hope we can all approach the year with a positive outlook, an optimistic spirit and work together to keep Greater Sudbury the ideal destination for people, professionals and investment in Northern Ontario.”
