Summer 2008 |

Science North remains one of Greater Sudbury’s most popular main attractions.

A family favourite, it is easy to spend an entire day there and wonder where the time went.

Waterworks:  Soak Up The Science is a new exhibit included with admission.  This interactive display is thrilling visitors of all ages.  Science North IMAX is currently showing Mysteries of the Great Lakes, a brilliant feature film on the Great Lakes basin.

At Dynamic Earth, the Earth Gallery allows visitors an opportunity for hands-on learning and fun. View fascinating films on the Atlas Copco Theatre’s 38-foot wide high-definition screen. Don’t forget to try your hand at the Floating Granite Globe on Dynamic Earth’s upper level.  The lower level features the Inco Chasm, an Underground Tour, the newly-expanded three-level Explora Mine, Nickel City Stories and the brand new Xstrata Nickel Gallery.

Greater Sudbury is a city known for its festivals. Check calendar listings for dates and times of Blues for Food, the Italian Festival, Northern Lights Festival Boréal, the Dragon Boat Festival, the Blueberry Festival, the Garlic Festival and Summerfest.

In honour of the city’s 125th Anniversary, Doors Open Greater Sudbury 2008 is an architectural self-guided tour scheduled for July 18 and 19. This two-day driveabout will feature 33 local sites of historical importance including the Art Gallery of Sudbury, the Northern Ontario Railroad and Heritage Museum, N’Swakamok Friendship Centre, St. Jean de Brebeuf Church, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Plan to visit the Art Gallery of Sudbury more than once during the summer months.  The gallery offers an ever-changing collection of interesting and evocative art on display in historical Bell Mansion. After viewing the current exhibit, take the time to stroll the grounds.  Enjoy beautifully-tended gardens and the spectacular view of Ramsey Lake from this scenic vantage point.

Market Square in downtown Sudbury is located in the historic crossroads of the city. Elgin St. was once known as Station Rd. The market welcomes approximately 45 seasonal vendors to the permanent indoor location. The market is the place to find fresh produce, bakedgoods, meats and crafts.
Local musicians and entertainers add to the festive feel of this popular local meeting spot.

With more than 300 lakes in the region, Greater Sudbury has no shortage of swimming, boating and fishing spots for hot summer days and long summer weekends. Five minutes from the downtown core, you can enjoy the scenic beauty of Ramsey Lake and Bell Park.

Take a leisurely stroll along the Jim Gordon Boardwalk, or hop aboard the Cortina Boat Cruise for a one-hour tour of the world’s largest freshwater lake surrounded by
a city.

If you’re looking for a little more excitement, drive out to Chelmsford and take in the racing action at Sudbury Downs. There’s off-track betting on race nights at Northern Ontario’s only live horse racing venue.  Spend an evening out with friends and enjoy a long, leisurely dinner at the Mardi Gras restaurant.
