Sudbury's Rev. Michael Marcotte and his wife, Karen, launched Door to Door Ministers last year to accommodate couples that want something other than a traditional church wedding.

Marcotte has married couples on the shores of Ramsey Lake, at the family camp, or on the first hole of at a golf club with a pet dog as the ring bearer.

"Door to Door Ministers is a name God popped into my heart," says Michael, who has been an ordained minister for 25 years and is affiliated with the Gospel Crusade of Canada.

The Marcottes get many requests to conduct outdoor weddings. They provided services at two weddings on New Year's Eve, and they are looking forward to a wedding this summer at a golf course where the couple's four dogs will be part of the ceremony.

"We conducted a wedding in a hospital for a terminally ill patient and his longtime partner who decided they wanted to get married," says Karen. "When the groom died a few weeks later, Michael conducted the funeral."

One of the benefits of Door to Door Ministers is that they will conduct weddings any day of the week and can accommodate couples who want to get married on short notice.

The Marcottes have also conducted simple ceremonies for couples who were planning weddings in another country but wanted to ensure their union was legal in Canada.

"Many of the couples are (having) second marriages. They don't always feel welcome by their church but they want a minister to conduct the ceremony," says Karen.

For the traditonalists, the Marcottes are affiliated with several churches in the city and can perform church weddings.

The average ceremony is 15 minutes with some running as long as 30 minutes, says Michael.

The Marcottes make an appointment to meet with the engaged couple before the wedding to talk about details. Couples can select the music they want as well as write their own vows.
