Hamilton-native Dan Mazzuca transferred from Brock University to Laurentian in 2009.
In his first year with the Voyageurs, he became an outstanding defenceman and leader on the field. He was named an Ontario University Athletics (OUA) east first team all-star and nominated for an all-Canadian title. Mazzuca scored the winning goal in a shoot-out against Ryerson during the first-round of playoffs last fall. He is in his final year of study in Laurentian's department of mathematics.
MacPherson is a first-year kinesiology. A born competitor, she earned a starting midfield position on the Lady Vees in her first year of varsity eligibility, and helped her team gain a spot in the playoffs. Her physical presence on the field combined with fine technical skills will be great assets for the Lady Vees for years to come. Before joining Laurentian University, MacPherson played soccer for Sacred Heart High School in New Market, and Club Team Richmond Hill U 21.
In 2009, the Laurentian University Alumni Association (LUAA) made a $98,000 gift to the university to create the LUAA Athletic Scholarships. Their donation made an amazing difference for Laurentian, as it created a precious recruiting tool for its athletics programs, and promised to help future generations of student athletes concentrate on their studies and sport, instead of finances. "
The Laurentian University Alumni Association Athletic Scholarships are presented annually to one male athlete and one female athlete. Each award recipient must meet CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport), OUA (Ontario University Athletics) eligibility, AFA (Athletic Financial Award) guidelines, and be recommended for the award by their Laurentian University coach and the director of athletics.
Laurentian University's department of athletics is home to 12 varsity sports teams. The Voyageurs and Lady Vees decorated history of pride and tradition includes 61 provincial championships as well as nine national championships in 49 years of competition.
