Francophones celebrate culture during September and October

|

For the second consecutive year, ROCS will be presenting la Grande Rentree, a month-long program of activities to celebrate the launch of its members' 2010-2011 season. ROCS is the Regroupement des organismes culturels de Sudbury, an umbrella group for Sudbury's Francophone cultural organizations.
With Anchored in ROCS as its theme, seven member organizations will present a wide variety of events from Sept. 16 to Oct. 22 to kick off an exciting new season for arts and culture in Greater Sudbury.
Members are deeply rooted in the Sudbury landscape. Over the years, hundreds of local authors, actors, painters, sculptors, storytellers, musicians and singers have benefitted from the presence and the resources of these organizations to reach local, national and international audiences.
The 2010-2011 arts and culture scene in Greater Sudbury will be close to the community, with contemporary productions and forward-looking developments. All Sudburians are warmly invited to take part in this program of exciting events that marks the start of a new season.
Member organizations of the ROCS are le Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario, la Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario, les Éditions Prise de parole, le Salon du livre du Grand Sudbury, Les Concerts La Nuit sur l'étang, le Centre franco-ontarien de folklore and La Slague du Carrefour francophone. These seven cultural organizations have played a major role in promoting and enriching the Franco-Ontarian identity for over 40 years.

Opening of Traces et empreintes urbaines by artist Suzanne Joos
5 to 7 pm at GNO, 174 Elgin Street.
Traces et empreintes urbaines is a study on urban landscapes and how time leaves its mark on them. The artist proposes an unusual and experimental view of these landscapes, which stimulates reflection by contrasting wide overviews in fictional city plans with a close-up view of laneway topography. Two memories collide and superimpose, one through the deformation of conventional maps, the other inspired by time-worn asphalt (holes, cracks, pot holes)

MISTEUR VALAIRE
8 pm in the Vale Inco Cavern at Science North
Take five 23-year olds who have been playing together since they were 6 years old and give them a trumpet, a saxophone, sequencers, percussions, turntables, a drum set, a bass, keyboards and a very eclectic attitude. What you get Misteur Valaire. It's not electro pop, nor hip hop, it's not jazz or rock, but an improbable mix of all that. With horns, samplers and enough beat to keep you dancing all night, these five musicians never fail to deliver contagious energy and good humour.

Qualité Motel
The After-party at TNO
After the outside concert, people are invited to finish off the evening dancing at the TNO with this 100% electronic sideline project of Misteur Valaire. A simple 5 DJ set up with vintage drum machine, cheapo synthesizers, samplers all you need to create high energy remixes and original works. These beats will keep you dancing all night.
