New library opens in Azilda

|

The community of Azilda came together Tuesday morning to celebrate the opening of the new library building.

Azilda has needed a new library for many years, so there were many people who attended the opening ceremonies who had tears of joy in their eyes.

The Azilda branch is located in the former fire hall/town hall building that is located close to the post office and other community buildings.

It is named in honour of Gilles Pelland, who was mayor of Rayside-Balfour, and who also served as a town councillor.

The building was on its way to being demolished, but Ward 4 Councillor Evelyn Dutrisac worked with community leaders, city staff and the library board to establish a new library in the old building.

The new library is three times the size of the old branch, and has lots of room for its bilingual collections, and computers. There is also a fireplace and comfortable chairs in an inviting reading area, says Ron Henderson, director of citizen and leisure for the city.

The building will also house the collection of the Rayside-Balfour Museum.
