Jean Hanson, the Rainbow District School Board's director of education, is retiring after 40 years of distinguished service in public education. She was recently honoured with the Leadership in Northern Education Award presented by The Lougheed Teaching and Learning Centre of Excellence at Huntington University. Congratulations to Dana Rinta, who was crowned Ms. Sudbury at the 2010 Sudbury Youth Contest this spring. The competition encourages young people to develop public speaking skills as well as manners and poise. It is organized by Benita Dellelce of Charm Plus. This is a non-profit event and money raised goes to charitable groups. Sudbury's Myra Gerow, a breast cancer survivor, recently received the 2010 Jeannette Hawke Volunteer Recognition Award for her contributions to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. She has been involved with the event for more than a decade. She was honoured at the Third Annual Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - Ontario Region Volunteer Awards Ceremony in Toronto. Sudbury photographer Erik Lovin was awarded the Commercial Photographer of the Year Award at the 2010 National Image Competition of the Professional Photographers of Canada in Mont-Tremblant, Que. Jeannine Larcer-Lalande has been recognized for her work to preserve the heritage of the Flour Mill. She received a lifetime achievement certificate from the Ontario Heritage Community Recognition Program. A Sudbury man who has devoted his time to bring together the local Muslim community is a recipient of the June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Voluntarism. Ozhand Ganjavi was presented with the award at a ceremony at the Art Gallery of Ontario April 23. A teacher at Jeanne-Sauvé Public School, Nicole Gravelle, has been recognized for her exceptional contribution to French-language education and the teaching profession. She was presented with the Mérite franco-ontarien en éducation at the Franco-Ontarian Teachers' Association's 2010 Policy Convention in Ottawa this spring. Learning Initiative is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. Located at 124 Cedar St. in downtown Sudbury, Learning Initiative is a unique, small business that is a school for adults who are interested in personal and professional growth, a human resource company, and a research and development institution. Quebec-born Jean Gagnon began working at Inco in 1951 as a humble labourer at the sinter plant in Copper Cliff. He soon became an advocate for health and safety issues. His story is told in a new book, Until the End. This book is written by Laurentian Media reporter Adelle Larmour, and is available at Village International and Librairie du Nouvel-Ontario. The Ontario section of the Assemblée Parlementaire de la Francophonie (Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophonie), has honoured Denis Hubert, the president of Collège Boréal, with the rank of Chevalier de l'Ordre de la Pléiade (Knight).Hubert is a staunch defender of the rights of the Franco-Ontarian community.
