The following was published in the Fall 2007 edition of Sudbury Living

Artist John Stopciati was born in the land of Renaissance art, but he grew up in Creighton Mine and was inspired by the rough northern landscape.

He developed an interest in art at a young age, and about 20 years ago, he gave up his job in management to pursue his passion full time. He ran a successful gallery in Copper Cliff for many years, and opened a new gallery and framing shop on Applegrove St. in Sudbury about a year ago.

“I live, eat and work art,” says Stopciati, who has been known to spend two years on one oil painting.

The artist is well known for his landscape paintings of Manitoulin Island’s and Killarney’s beauty. He has also done a study of native people in colourful costumes; work that is a favourite of German and Oriental tourists who visit the Georgian Bay area.

Like all artists, Stopciati’s work has evolved over the years. He says he was influenced by his travels to Italy, Mexico and the Caribbean, and has begun using deeper and warmer colours in his work. He hopes to capture the beauty of these areas in future work.

Stopciati Gallery is located at 153 Applegrove St., and features originals and reproductions. Visit his site at (www.johnstopciati.com).
