Lives Lived: Bob Bateman active in city life

Well known businessman Bob Bateman died earlier this week in his 83rd year.

He remained an active citizen to the end of his life. He was a member of a new citizens’ group, Our Towns – Our City, has recently mobilized to advocate for the decentralization of municipal affairs. The group made a presentation to City Council in January,

He came to Sudbury to work for the City as an assistant in the recreation department, where he was in charge of playgrounds and where he guided many a young mind. In the 60s, he was appointed director of Urban Renewal, which position he held until the completion of the project. He was then hired by the developer of the urban renewal project, Oshawa Wholesale and he spent ten years developing properties for them in Sudbury and Montreal.

For the past 20,  years he was an independent and much respected deal maker. Recently, he was appointed a lay bencher for the Law Society of Ontario.

He was a past president of the Sudbury and District Chamber of Commerce and a long time executive member of the Ontario Conservative Party, locally and provincially.There will be no visitation or funeral.
