Sudbury Living Magazine December 18, 2019 Lifestyle, Upfront No Comments on CBC show filmed in Sudbury

In a new take on the popular factual entertainment format, BACK IN TIME FOR WINTER  follows one modern Sudbury family on a winter time-travelling adventure. Beginning in the 1940s, each week the Carlson family will experience a new decade – living through 60 years of iconic outdoor activities as well as trends in cold-weather food, fashion, domestic work and technology.

The Carlsons – mom Melanie, dad Dave, and daughters Lauren, Alex, and Chelsey must contend with the social norms of each decade, giving up their modern comforts, including a dishwasher, snowblower, and television, as well as adapting to evolving gender roles and fashion trends. The family’s suburban home is a time machine on the series, dramatically transformed for each episode’s decade to reflect the style and sensibility of the time. Every detail is considered, from decor and technology to food and appliances, creating a stunning backdrop for domestic life indoors. While outdoors, the family takes on the fads in cold-weather sports and outdoor chores.

The season is a treasure trove of archival details and items from each period, painstakingly sourced by the production team to accurately represent the decades. I’ve attached a couple of photos of the family from the series, to give you a sense of how different each decade looks. The season premieres Thursday, Jan. 9 at 8 pm on CBC TV and CBC Gem.

In their everyday lives, mom Melanie is a mature student, and dad Dave is a music teacher and professional guitarist. The busy couple shares domestic responsibilities, including cooking and raising their three daughters: 16-year-old Lauren, 13-year-old Alex, and 12-year-old Chelsey. Like many modern families, on a cold winter day they prefer to be cozied up inside with their technology close at hand. Together, the Carlsons will leave their modern comforts behind to experience how life in a cold weather climate impacted evolving gender roles, new technologies, stunning world events and amazing fashion trends.

The family’s suburban home will be their time machine as it’s dramatically transformed for every decade to reflect the style and sensibility of the time. Every detail is considered from décor and technology to food and kitchen appliances, creating a stunning backdrop for domestic life indoors in this immersive experiment. While outdoors, the Carlsons take on the fads in cold-weather sports, recreation, outdoor work and play with authentic period equipment.

Evocative, nostalgic and rich with archival detail, BACK IN TIME FOR WINTER gives viewers a glimpse into our most frigid season, through the modern-day perspective of a Canadian family.

BACK IN TIME FOR WINTER was filmed in Sudbury, and is produced by 3Bird Media and eOne. Andrika Lawren and Jennifer Twamley are executive producers, and Monica Kalmanovitch is series producer. For CBC, Sally Catto is General Manager, Programming; Jennifer Dettman is Executive Director, Unscripted Content; and Michelle McCree is the Executive in Charge of Production.
