The awards event, now in its fourth year, is a project of the Sudbury Arts Council in collaboration with Regroupement des organismes culturels de Sudbury (ROCS).

In addition to the honour of being recognized by their peers, the artists will be awarded cash bursaries to help them continue to pursue their creative projects.

The Award for Outstanding Emerging Artist, a cash prize of $2,500, will be presented to a professional artist with 10 years or less of professional artistic practice for the excellence and creativity of her or his artworks and performances. The nominees are sculptor Tyler Fauvelle, music video producer/director Shawn Kosmerly and visual artist Alix Voz.

The Award for Outstanding Mid-Career Artist, a $2,500 bursary, will be presented to a mid-career artist with more than 10 years of experience, for his or her sustained efforts to pursue a professional career in the arts and to produce new works, while contributing to the development and betterment of the Greater Sudbury arts community. The nominees are visual artist Wallace Gillard, musicians Jeff, Mitch and Julie Houle and actor/director STC Artistic Director Caleb Marshall.

The Award for Exceptional Achievement in the Arts, which comes with a $3,500 bursary, will be presented to a professional artist for exceptional contribution to the arts during their career spanning more than 25 years through an extensive body of works in one or several disciplines, as well as through her/his contribution over time to the development and betterment of the Greater Sudbury arts community. The nominees are author/poet Roger Nash, and visual artist Oryst Sawchuk.

The 2017 Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts gala is pleased to host an exhibition of talented secondary school artists curated by the Art Gallery of Sudbury.  In addition there will be live stage performances throughout the evening. A popular silent auction is made possible by generous donations from supporters of the arts.

Tickets, $50 (before handling fees) are available at the Sudbury Theatre Centre box office and website. Tickets are also available at Artists on Elgin (cash only).
