Frubar offers juices and smoothies loaded with healthful stuff

We all like our food fast but we know we should avoid it for our body’s sake. Perhaps that’s why juices and smoothies have become so popular. We can get a vitamin and nutrition fix quickly without having to take the time to prepare and eat a plateful of fruits and veggies.

Sudbury’s Frank Ruberto enjoyed his visits to a juice bar in Naples, Florida, so much, he decided to open his own in the Nickel City.

Frubar Juicery opened last June on Cedar St. and was an immediate hit with students and downtown workers. It is the only storefront cold press juicery in Northern Ontario. Over the summer, it started to attract older folks and families.

Juicing is different from blending or pulping. The water and nutrients are extracted by a juicer from a fruit or vegetable while discarding the tough fibre. This makes the juice easier to digest. A smoothie blends whole fruits and veggies. Fans of the latter suggest pulp is important to their dietary needs.

Frubar products are tasty and are the ultimate comfort foods that are good for the soul as well as the body. The menu is listed on a large blackboard at the front of the shop.

Smoothies are available with dairy products or without. A favourite is the Hulk Mash, a healthy blend of kale, spinach, pineapple, mango, lemon, coconut milk, agave syrup, hemp seeds and yogurt.

Freshly-made salads and soups are also available. Recently hot apple cider was added to the menu.

Ruberto is enthusiastic about a new product called bulletproof coffee. It is made with the best quality coffee beans, butter and MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) oil. MCT oil is considered by some to be a healthy fat made with coconut, palm kernel oils or ghee (clarified butter).

According to the SmartPublications website MCT oil was “first used in the mid-1900s in conjunction with a prescribed diet to reduce seizures. MCTs were originally formulated in the 1950s as an alternative food source for patients unable to digest normal fats and oils. More recently, MCTs have become a favourite energy source for endurance athletes.”

While one might have to be a scientist to understand the exact combination of bulletproof coffee ($2.50), it tastes like a latte only lighter and smoother. There is no need to add sugar.

Sugar, as we now know, is the bad guy in our diet while many fats are considered “good.”

Ruberto, who also operates several other businesses including a renovations company, is in his 40s and is at the age when eating healthy has become more of a concern to him than it was 20 years ago.

He is proud Frubar products are organic, as locally-sourced as possible, and have no additives, preservatives or added sugar.

“We are brand new and we continue to learn,” says Ruberto, who was one of the original owners of Peppi Panini on Durham St.

People who are thinking of trying a juice cleanse to lose weight or for health reasons will be interested to learn Frubar will prepare an assortment of juices for one-, three- and five-day cleanses.

Some people report feeling more focused and energetic during and after detox cleansing diets. The Mayo Clinich advises anyone considering a detox cleanse to get the OK from a doctor first.
