A diary of summer days

June 6, 7, 8, 2003
We got the boat in the water. No problem. The boat is left on the shore over the winter and we are always happy to see it hasn’t been stolen or vandalized. There are lots of bugs on shore, but is not too bad at the camp.

The first trip of the season is always the hardest as we have to bring so much stuff. But once we are here, it is heaven.

We have no Bell service this year and our cell phones don’t work here.
When we open camp we have a champagne toast and a shot of vodka. To one more year!

Today is the first day of summer, and it is a real summer day. We did some swimming. We tried a new recipe for supper. It is called High Island Chicken: six chicken thighs sautéed in mushrooms, mangoes, one chopped onion and two garlic cloves.

Canada Day
We arrived late July 1. It is very hot, about 30C. Buddy, the dog we found in the park in February, loves camp and is a real swimmer. Our dog Teddy is getting old and the heat bothers him. We played Desert Island Discs.

Music I couldn’t live without on a desert island: The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper, anything by Frank Sinatra, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Perhaps a box set of the hits of the ‘60s.

We arrived Saturday, a bright sunny afternoon. The blueberries are disappointing. Little to pick. Perhaps it is too soon. In the evening, the clouds rolled in from the northeast, and what a downpour.

It lasted about an hour and a half, and it was beautiful again. I put on my bug suit and climbing shoes and took a walk around the island with Buddy. I took a short cut where the island is split and almost killed myself trying to climb up to the other side. I decided the safest route was to slide back down to the lake, and swim to the dock, shoes and all.

We have had a lot of good times on the island this summer. Last weekend we picked blueberries. We took the boat to the other side of the island to pick them, and have been busy during the week freezing them.

I made a pasta salad, the recipe is from the Milk Calendar. The dressing has feta cheese and lemon put in a blender. My food critic said the salad tasted “alien,” but I liked it.

Everyone is looking for Mars in the sky. It is an orange star. Mars is now closer to Earth than it has been in 50,000 years.
